To be located on a landmark site overlooking the Pearl River in the new city centre, the Guangzhou Opera House would include a 1,800 seat Opera House, a 2,500 seat Multi- Purpose Hall, a Performance Art Research & Exchange Center, Shops, Restaurants and other related ancillary support facilities. Together with the Guangzhou Museum on the opposite site, they form the Guangzhou Culture and Arts Square.

The scheme integrates the Opera House with the Museum in a dynamic relationship where the Opera House, mostly above ground because of its expressive nature and use, is linked directly underground to the Museum, which is semi-sunken because of its quiet and contemplative atmosphere. This is further reinforced by the single continuous roof connecting the two building elements.
