LA SALLE COLLEGE, Hong Kong

1979

The New building for the long-established secondary school contains 36 classrooms, 16 laboratories and special rooms, a large library, lecture theatres, an auditorium (1,000 seats) and comprehensive sports facilities including a full-size soccer pitch with 400-metre running tracks, an Olympic size swimming pool, a large gymnasium (two basketball courts) and two squash courts.

The teaching facilities are planned on four floors around a central landscaped courtyard with stairs and lifts at the four corners. The auditorium, lecture theatres and gymnasium which require large spans and high headroom are placed under the courtyard with their roof forming the floor of the courtyard. These larger spaces form a podium under the teaching floors with the ground floor entirely open. The soccer pitch and running track is to the south of the building at the lowest level. Due to the proximity to aircraft flight path, the entire school is air-conditioned and double-glazed.
